SHOW REVIEW: turnstile - salt lake city, ut

Within just a few hours of announcing their headlining tour, Turnstile had sold out every date. It was going to be an absolutely memorable time for everyone, unfortunately I had arrived a little bit later so I had missed out on seeing Truth Cult but made it just in time to see Ekulu take the stage. When Ekulu stepped out on stage it was definitely captivating from the moment they did, the vocalist, Chris Wilson with the deep growl of his vocals and he had his windbreaker draped over his face and definitely made it very chilling. The crowd went absolutely wild for them to say the least and it was my first time ever hearing them, an amazing fit on opening for Turnstile.

The last of the openers was Citizen. One of my top favorite bands that never fails at putting on a good performance, I’ve seen this band at multiple venues in Utah on all types of stages from Kilby Court, Commonwealth, The Loading Dock, The Complex, and now Soundwell. No matter how big or how small the stage the energy has always been crazy, tonight was no different, one of my favorite things about seeing Turnstile take on the smaller venues is everyone being up close and personal as much as possible, from being able to scream the lyrics right into the microphone and fans getting to stage dive. Citizen takes every opportunity they can get from having everyone join them up on stage and having that connection with fans.

During the changeover as the members of Turnstile did their quick soundcheck, the crowd was jamming out to the classic 80’s tracks and even the bassist, Freaky wrapped up his portion as quick as he could and hopped off the stage and was grooving with the crowd sidestage to I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) by Whitney Houston. While it was a bummer for the fans who weren’t able to score tickets due to the small capacity at the venue, I believe this show at this venue was a special thing for Turnstile. There is no doubt that this band is taking over the world from playing late night talk shows and just fresh off their performances at Coachella, their fan base is growing every day and the next time that people would be seeing Turnstile would be at the bigger venues. There’s something about playing small venues and the memories from that night that stick with artists and fans forever. Fans got the chance to be up close and personal and stage dive with their favorite band, and throughout the night have the members give a helping hand where a fan needed it most. I’m sure the next time people see Turnstile will be in the bigger venues and give more people the opportunity but that night was definitely special and hearing the tracks from Glow On was definitely well worth the wait.
