SHOW REVIEW: grayscale - salt lake city, ut

The last time that I had seen Grayscale was in 2019, so to say that I was just excited to see them on their 2022 was an understatement, especially missing them on their last tour in celebration of their newest album release, Umbra. The Summer Dream Tour was exactly a summer dream for any fan of indie band, Grayscale. Besides it being one of the hottest days in Utah, reminding us that it’s definitely summer time the setlist that the band curated was an absolute dream. From starting off the night with old classics like; Let It Rain, Palette, and Say Something. A few handfuls that I definitely wasn’t expecting to be part of the setlist. The rest of the setlist was mixed with hits from the Nella Vita and Umbra albums such as; In Violet, Dirty Bombs, Young, and Atlantic.

“We have a couple of songs on the setlist that you can really dance to, so we want to see everyone in the crowd tonight moving, can you do that for us?” Questioned vocalist, Collin Walsh. The songs mentioned are the iconic trio; Baby Blue, Motown, and Diamonds. I was definitely geeking with excitement when they ended the dance song trio with Diamonds, it’s something that I definitely still see as a summer song no matter how long ago it came out. The other thing that made this show absolutely amazing was the light design, maybe I’m speaking from more of a photographer's perspective but I think it definitely made a difference with the vibes and effect that the band was going for.

The setlist wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows, would it have really been a Grayscale show without the two hit songs to really put fans in their feels? The songs in question being, Slept and Forever Yours. During Slept, Walsh had brought out an acoustic guitar. “Salt Lake, every time we drive through here we always feel like we entered another planet. You guys have it all out here from the mountains, the desert, it’s crazy but we love it and we love you guys.” While the turnout of the crowd wasn’t anything major it definitely still feels like one for the books and it didn’t phase Grayscale in the slightest. Before the indie band stepped out on the stage to close out the night their tour package consisted of; The Ivy that had a major The 1975 sound to them, Bearings the pop-punk band who has now been on a tour package for the second time with Grayscale, and direct support from Guardin which was a huge fan favorite for the Salt Lake crowd. Overall was a good night and The Summer Dream tour is not one worth missing.
