It’s been years since I had seen Beartooth live, when their Below album was released I have been wishing for them to come back to Salt Lake City, Utah since then. We missed out on the Below Tour Part 1 but thankfully they made up for it on the Below Tour Part 2 with just as great of a lineup as Part 1.
We started the night with ERRA, the funny thing about this band is I’ve definitely been a fan since the first time I had seen them perform live but it’s always slipped by me on finding out that they’re playing in town. They’re slowly making their way to some of the top few bands I’ve seen perform live and it always just happens to be a coincidence. Despite the countless times that I have seen them and photographed them I never grow tired of it, and every single time the thing that stands out most to me is JT Cavey’s and Jesse Cash’s vocals and of course the energy from the entire band.
The next two openers are long time veterans of this scene and while they’ve been doing this for quite some time The Devil Wears Prada and Silverstein. I’ve been to my fair share of shows seeing both bands headline and open and no matter where they fall in a lineup they never disappoint. The Devil Wears Prada stepped out on stage and the thing that I admire the most about them is the energy they always bring to the stage, which makes photographing them a challenge on its own. What had shocked me most about their set was the choice of closing song, they ended with Dogs Can Grow Beards All Over which if you’ve been following a band since the beginning like I have, you’d be just as excited and shocked considering the fact that it was a song off of their debut album. While the set may have not been very long they definitely played a good variety of songs and I believe them playing the older song was their way of showing that despite the changes that they endure as the years go by they’ll never forget their roots and what had started it all.
Next up was the post-hardcore icons Silverstein, and their setlist for this run was the perfectly curated with selections all across their ten-album discography. We even got to hear their newest song, Over Now off of their upcoming album, Misery Made Me.As they finished off being the last of the openers they managed to get the crowd warmed up from moshpits, circle pits, crowdsurfers, wall of deaths, and calling for sing alongs to get everyone’s vocals warmed up for what Beartooth was about to bring to the stage.
Beartooth came on with the biggest production I have seen to date from the band. They started with Below. They had a large white curtain draped across the stage so that the intro was just the silhouette of vocalist Caleb Shomo. Right as the chorus hit an explosion of purple and black, fitting to their newest album cover filled the room. They had screens playing behind them of various images, the band members bounced back and forth around on stage rises and they had CO2 cannons. Beartooth definitely gave it their all and the fans that showed up that night did the exact same. Throughout their entire set which had songs from all albums in the Beartooth discography. The wait was well worth it and Beartooth was making it up to all the cities they missed on The Below Tour part one. It’s definitely a show worth catching.
