REVIEW: peel it back/wilted flowers by luring

Columbus, Ohio-based band Luring are among the newest in the alternative music scene, and this summer has brought their first two singles, “Peel It Back” and “Wilted Flowers.”

“Peel It Back,” which released in June, was the band’s debut. The instrumentals immediately bring an energetic tempo to the track, while the irresistible guitar leads display the band’s Midwest emo influences. The bass, drums, and vocals have more of the spotlight in the verses as the song leads up to its anthemic chorus, where the vocals deliver an emotive performance while singing intriguing lyrics such as “I’m hollow, I’ll just wrap the wounds you left on me.” That emotion remains throughout and the performances express it very well.

The latter of these two singles is the newly-released “Wilted Flowers,” which came out in early July. The band dabbled with synths on “Peel It Back,” but this track incorporates that even further, as it leads the intro before more instruments kick in. The vocals seem to have a bit of extra production, adding in some poppier influences during the verses and the bridge. Catchy lead guitars lead the chorus, and the instrumentation as a whole brings louder dynamics overall, making those choruses some of the most powerful sections of the whole song.

Both “Peel It Back” and “Wilted Flowers” showcase the different influences in Luring’s captivating sound, and offer glimpses of what this brilliant new band brings to the table.
