REVIEW: i might be dead by royal hearts

Over the course of 2021, Florida-based post-hardcore band Royal Hearts followed up their 2020 debut EP “Within Reach” with two new singles (“These Words Have Weight” and “Six Feet In Conversation”). Several months later, the band has returned with another new track, titled “I Might Be Dead.”

Listeners instantly hear plenty of emotion within the performances, from the screamed vocals and strung out guitars in the intro to later performances throughout the track. Chugging riffs and overall energetic instrumentation finishes out the rest of the intro and leads the verses, which bring a contrast between heavier vocals and slightly more melodic leads. Musically, the song combines evident influences of metalcore, post-hardcore and melodic hardcore and blends them together very well.

Lyrically, the song is about struggling with mental health, but still perservering through your darkest moments, and the opening lines (“Pick myself up off the floor once again, moving forward even if I have to pretend”) quickly show that. Another lyric that’s repeated a few times throughout the song is “I might be dead but I’m still trying,” which I feel sums up the song perfectly.

With performances equally as powerful as its lyrics and overall message, “I Might Be Dead” is an impactful single from Royal Hearts.
