REVIEW: like love by the amity affliction

Trigger Warning - Mentions of grief and loss

2020 brought the release of The Amity Affliction’s seventh LP, “Everyone Loves You… Once You Leave Them.” Since then, they’ve dropped a couple of b-sides, and nearly a year after those, the band is back with another new single, titled “Like Love.”

The intro immediately delivers a catchy hook that returns a few times throughout the course of the song, and while the track starts out with soft and delicate instrumentals and vocals, things quickly take a turn the moment the verses begin. The vigorous drums bring bursts of energy to the song during these sections, and the much harsher vocals pair with the more furious instrumentation to show off the band’s heavier side. The pre-chorus mixes in some clean vocals before a much more melodic chorus, where the vocal performance displays a lot of emotion. The intricate lead guitar lines added all throughout the track are a nice touch, and the string instruments brought in during the final chorus make the end of the song sound more anthemic.

Lyrically, the song depicts how it feels to deal with the loss of someone close to you. The line “they don’t know the pain we’re in, the hurt just beneath the skin” explains the indescribable pain one feels while going through the grieving process, and the lyrics “So if it takes me away for a while, we could touch heaven as we kiss the stars; I can forget myself and make my way to where you are” show how it feels to miss someone you’ve lost and wish you could see them again one more time.

From the performances to the lyrics, “Like Love” is a poignant and powerful track from the Amity Affliction.
