REVIEW: another kill for the highlight reel by save face

Save Face blew me away earlier this year with their single “GLITTER,” a track that I consistently had on repeat after initially discovering it. After that, I couldn’t wait to hear what the rest of their newly released album “Another Kill For The Highlight Reel” had in store.

The album begins with its brilliant opener, “The Funeral You’ve Been Asking For” opens with an eerie piano lead and vocals that will immediately intrigue the listener, but it’s not long before the guitar and marching snare drum come in to build up the track before its chorus, where the tempo speeds up and the vocals deliver one of many phenomenal performances. This track showcases the sound that listeners can expect from the record as a whole, and it sets the tone perfectly for the album.

“Curse Me Out” puts the vocals on display with a performance showing plenty of charisma, and from the melodies in the choruses to the drumbeats in verse one and lead guitars in verse two, this track is one of the catchiest on the album. Next up is the album’s title track, “Another Kill For The Highlight Reel,” beginning with whispered vocals reminiscent of those that open the My Chemical Romance hit “Helena” before unforgettable octave leads finish out the rest of the intro. The band’s pop-punk influences really show through the instrumentation and energetic tempo on this one, and the vocals put on another stellar performance throughout the track, especially during the theatrical bridge and outro. “Bury Me (Tonight!)” was one of the singles that came out prior to the album’s release, and from its massive chorus to the very catchy melodies, it’s such a fun track to listen to overall.

“Sharpen Your Teeth” shows the band’s punk influences with the shouted vocals and swift instrumentation. The MCR influences shine through on this one through the vocal and instrumental performances. The bridge starts out with just vocals and piano, but the drums and guitars quickly return to make that section even more powerful and impactful than it already is. “A Song For Your Futile Heart” slows down the tempo a little bit, with the snare drum leading the more midtempo rhythm. The vocal performance is very emotive, and the instrumental section has the same effect, especially once the horns are added in. “GLITTER” is the track that got me into this band in the first place, and with its unforgettable composition and performances, it’s still one of my favorites on the whole record and a track I’ve come back to countless times.

Another favorite of mine is “The Perks Of Not Being Able To See Your Reflection.” The dark, haunting composition make it a perfect song to listen to around Halloween or in the fall in general, and it contains yet another chorus that’s been stuck in my head since I heard the album. “A.M. Gothic” displays the band’s emo side through mesmerizing performances, and “Watch You Die Again” is a little more simplistic musically, but spotlights the vocal talent throughout, especially during the choruses. “Please Murder Me” wraps things up, and it brings a full-circle moment to the record as it starts off in the same way the album’s introductory track did - with vocals and piano. The strings really bring more emphasis to the instrumentals of the track, and it’s a really strong ballad that concludes the album perfectly.

“Another Kill For The Highlight Reel” contains fascinating performances on each of its eleven tracks, and as a whole, it’s a superb record by Save Face.
