REVIEW: something to live for by ethan jewell

Ethan Jewell is a nineteen year old Texas-based poet. He has just released the final single, “something to live for”, leading up to his next album. Released on August 20th 2021, “something to live for”, follows his two most recent singles “drive thru poem” and “i feel better when nobody remembers i exist”. For those that appreciate spoken word poetry supported by a calming and inviting melody, Ethan Jewell is someone you should know.

“something to live for” continues to give me goosebumps when I listen to it. It starts with a voicemail playback where he is talking directly to someone, then it switches tone as he talks about all of the reasons he has found to live for, and it comes full circle at the end where he finishes the voicemail. This song gives hope to the hopeless, a strong but comforting message that “You just got to seek out a little bit of joy, a little bit of a reason to live every single day”. It reminds me of moments where I was too afraid to be vulnerable and to ask for help when I really needed it most, but it is also confirmation that no one is alone in feeling that way. “something to live for” is like the friend who constantly reminds us that we are worthy of the space we take up, and everyone needs a friend like that.

Ethan Jewell’s spoken word poetry invokes a lot of emotions that so many of us face and shows that we’ll never be alone in those feelings.
