REVIEW: ordinary love by sporting

Rhode Island based alternative-pop band Sporting recently released a new single on September 17th 2021, “Ordinary Love”. Jake Harris, the band’s founder and vocalist/rhythm guitarist, states “I had this overbearing excitement making this song the entire time because… I was able to go to the studio and work on a song without any expectations at all”. Their sound is similar to bands like Bearings, Like Pacific, and Capstan.

For a band with only 254 monthly listeners on Spotify, I’m shocked they don’t have more. “Ordinary Love” is about a mutual love between two people but they don’t love each other in the same way. The lyrics “Turn away turn away you don't need to see me like this / Carry on Carry on without me” delivers the heartbreaking reality that they were in love and the other person only had love for them. It’s incredible what love can do to a person, willing to wait until the end of time just for a moment with the person they love. As you know I'm more of a “focus on the lyrics” type of reviewer because I love a song that tells a story, I also think the production of this song in general surprised me for Sporting being a newer band in the scene. Honestly, I’m ready to hear this song live and in person.

I think Sporting is a band with a great sound and has the potential to be well known. I look forward to seeing where they go.
