REVIEW: heavy hand by anne bennett

Anne Bennett, an alternative singer/songwriter born and raised in Salem, Massachusetts, has just released her second single “Heavy Hand”. Her haunting and melancholic vocals are often influenced by her time living in Salem. Bennett states that “Heavy Hand” is a “you can run but you can’t escape” type of song that paints a haunting image of mortality as it stands.

The intro to “Heavy Hand” made me think of “Call Me” by Blondie with unique vocals backed by deep intense guitar. As I listen to this song I can’t help but feel like I've been put into the climax of a horror film. I’m running and screaming, checking behind me every so often to see if I’ve lost Anne who is chasing me with her “Heavy Hand” of unfortunate fate. Bennett mentioned that this song was written in the midst of the pandemic and during a deep depression, this song put her in the role of things we can’t really escape (the virus, depression, death). With Spooky Season right around the corner, this song should be added to the rotation of what to listen to in order to fully envelope the main character energy of a thriller film.

For those that enjoy finding more women artists within the rock scene, Anne is someone who’s musical journey you should follow. I believe she will be a major contributor to classic rock coming full circle into its modern era.
