Tyler Posey, a punk rock artist who is also a member of Five North, has just released his new EP titled Drugs two days ago. Tyler states “I’m just thinking of more ways people can just have fun with what I put out and drown out the bullshit of everything else” as mentioned in ET Canada. For those that loved the early 2000s alternative and pop punk genres, Tyler Posey is someone to check out.
The EP starts off with “Someone Else’s Dream” which is so bittersweet. The lyric “Now it’s over and it feels like someone else’s dream” feels like reminiscing moments of your past that you hold close to your heart but not being in contact with the people that helped create those moments, so all you can do is remember them fondly.
“Sober” has a gentler sound but the chorus is upbeat and it almost makes me think of how healing isn’t linear. The song talks about trying to beat your addictions and bad habits and gives a more realistic view of those who are trying to heal. However, ultimately coming to the conclusion that you don’t want that life for yourself and that a sober life is one you want for yourself and are just struggling to get to.
Tyler’s rugged and direct vocals in “Don’t Try And Fix Me” make the lyrics hit that much harder. The lyric “You know i’ve been there too, I want the best for you, but will you figure it out in time” broke my heart. I think it’s knowing that you have destructive habits and seeing someone you love develop the same habits and just hoping they won't follow your path.
“Happy” makes me think about how even when you’re not okay you put on a face to make people believe that you’re fine. The lyric “Yeah I know how to act just give me a name, I’ve been playing these roles you don’t want me to play” felt so personal given the way Tyler’s name is so well known. I won’t mention it directly because I can respect that Tyler wants to earn his place in the music industry, and that’s all we’re here to talk about, is his music.
“Kerosene” is one of my favorites on the EP because of the layering of the vocals. Behind the main layer is a lot of added screaming that you almost have to isolate in order to really hear it but I think it adds to the “presenting a calm face” when you’re screaming inside. I think this song is about being upfront with others you involve yourself with about who you are and what you’ve been through.
The most listened to song on the EP, “Shut Up”, makes me think of an iconic emo anthem “If It Means a Lot to You” by A Day To Remember. The soft and romantic start with vocals from Tyler and Phem together that lead into a strong and passionate melody. The lyric “your words only make it hurt, so shut up” is one most of us can relate to when it comes to heartbreak and trying to move on.
Lastly, “Past Life” I think represents knowing who you used to be but also knowing that you can change for the better. It’s one of those things where sometimes we get lost, we make mistakes, and we get to a point where we don’t recognize ourselves anymore. This song makes me think of self-reflection and returning back to who you truly are for your own sake and accepting that for a while there you were lost and hurting.
I truly believe this is a new era for Tyler. Whether he’s releasing music with Five North or on his own, I think this is his big turning point, the beginning of something great. Personally, I can’t wait to see what he does next.
