SHOW REVIEW: invent animate - dallas

Friday was a monumental day for Invent Animate and their career: the first date of their first US headlining tour. Sold out at the Cambridge Room in the House of Blues, Dallas was ready to make history for this band. Unfortunately, this tour took an unexpected turn right away as bassist Caleb was rushed to the hospital before doors opened. Thankfully, he’s okay and already back with the band, but it was definitely a weird feeling being at the show and not really knowing if he was okay. The band pushed through and continued to bring Dallas a show to remember.

Unfortunately, my approval for photo and review was lost in translation due to the Caleb situation and didn’t get into the show until the last song of Void of Vision, but of course I’m just glad that Caleb is okay through everything and wasn’t upset about it. Before Invent Animate took the stage, guitarist Keaton came up to announce that Caleb was in fact okay to ease the worrying among the crowd and get the show started. Right off the bat, their custom lights on stage illuminated the room, and the three-piece band for the night brought the energy up with the first song Absence Persistent off their latest album Heavener. Matching double bass hits and guitar riffs immediately got the crowd opening a pit and moving, and vocalist Marcus’s soft delivery in the first verse led to an explosive reaction into the chorus and second verse. Continuing off the new album, Shade Astray and False Meridian were next to keep the crowd going. The room was pretty small, but that mosh pit seemed to take up the majority of the space and made the room feel bigger because of it. As a drummer myself, Labyrinthine really showcases how talented drummer Brody is with the opening drum groove as every hit is precise and clean. Given space for a longer headlining set, they were able to give some love to their previous work, bringing back songs such as Cloud Cascade, As If It Never Was, Darkbloom, White Wolf and Luna, all of which were given amazing responses from the crowd including myself. Also, with the longer set came two live debuts, the much softer Reverie and the newest late title-track single Heavener. The former gave space for a beautiful break in the middle of the set to appreciate Marcus’s vocal talent, and the latter got the crowd singing along even though this song just came out a little over a week ago. Without a Whisper had everyone bouncing up and now and screaming along, and Immolation of Night ended the show on a breakdown bang with the mosh pit bigger than ever. Given the circumstances, Invent Animate really pulled through the challenges of the day, and I hope the rest of the tour is as energetic as this crowd was.
