NEW MUSIC FRIDAY: spiritbox and the plot in you

‘Enemy’ is the second single released from The Plot In You’s upcoming record, Swan Song. This one differs from the first single, Face Me, as it centers around the bass guitar, bringing a slower and heavier tone with a simple distorted, almost grungy line that carries the song while vocalist Landon Tewers does his masterful work on his lyrics and the delivery. The signature raw lyrics and vocal melodies make you feel like you’re floating through the chorus while the verses syncopate between doubles and triples to keep it interesting. We can’t forget about the breakdown of course; it’s very simple but it stops you in your tracks and hits your chest hard. The tone of it is an interesting choice too, as the last two bars of guitars have that sound like it was barely unplugged but still functioning, giving an extra taste. Overall, it’s amazing how they can make a song sound catchy to favor pop genres, while keeping the dark instrumentation and tone of heavier genres to please those fans too. With this song and Face Me, I’m stoked to see how the rest of the album turns out. Swan Song releases on September 17th via Fearless Records.

Arguably the biggest breakout band in metalcore country right now, Spiritbox is back with another single ‘Hurt You’ ahead of their debut album release, and as with everything else beforehand, this one does not disappoint. Almost with a “jumping in the audience” vibe, the beefy guitar tones and punchy drum hits make for an excellent beginning. Background electronic sounds give a nice twist as vocalist Courtney LaPlante does her classic back and forth screaming into singing about what sounds like two individuals that want to be together, but end up destroying each other. Even after one listen, you’ll catch yourself humming that catchy chorus with “I’m happier when I hurt you.” This one stands out as it will most likely make it into their setlist live, especially with the energy you can already feel that will be given off during the breakdown. Mark your calendar as this album could be a top contender for the year. Eternal Blue releases on September 17th via Rise Records.
